On-field umpire Nitin Menon did not announce it, but the decision was overturned when Hawkeye showed three reds, which Masood felt was not the correct trajectory.
Shan Masood was unhappy with the track record shown by his LBW decision during the Cape Town Test, again raising concerns about the technology. On-field umpire Nitin Menon did not announce it, but the decision was overturned when Hawkeye showed three reds, which Masood felt was not the correct trajectory.
“It’s simple. He was a swinger. If you see the ball that hit me, it went a long way. I got hit on the outside edge and showed up as an inswinger. To be very honest, that baffled me.”
To complement his point, Masood said that he felt the ball hit off the line and that the image shown while tracking the ball was different from where it hit his pads. He exclaimed that an outswinger beat him, but he showed hitting inside.
“At first glance, you could see that it also felt like it was out of line. I just felt like it was a different image. I didn’t get hit where Hawkeye showed I got hit. They hit me more on the outside of my leg than on the inside; shows it inside. That’s not an inswinger. I was beaten by an outswinger and that’s what the referee thought too, and that’s all I can say about it.”
When India and Bangladesh raised similar concerns about Hawkeye in South Africa
It is not the first time Hawkeye has come under scrutiny in South Africa matches, with India and Bangladesh having been on the receiving end of shocking decisions before. Indian players expressed frustration when Dean Elgar survived a close call in 2022 as the trajectory showed the ball going over the stumps.
“It’s the whole country against 11 guys,” exclaimed KL Rahul, while Ravichandran Ashwin added: “You should find better ways to win, SuperSport.” Even field referee Marais Erasmus was shocked by the decision and exclaimed: “That’s impossible.”

South Africa has hardly been a victim of these Hawkeye mistakes in its home games. There have been numerous instances where refereeing standards were lackluster and heavily favored the Proteas.
While it is true that Hawkeye has its own gaps, it is disconcerting that only opponents suffer their consequences in South Africa. It has been happening for some time and the ICC must investigate it.
