Hailing from the same state as Sanju Samson, Vignesh caught everyone’s attention when Mumbai Indians picked him for INR 30 lakhs, their base price.
Vignesh Puthur, a 23-year-old spinner from Perinthalmanna in Kerala’s Malappuram district, emerged as one of the surprises of the recently concluded IPL 2025 mega auction.
Hailing from the same state as Sanju Samson, Vignesh caught everyone’s attention when Mumbai Indians picked him for INR 30 lakhs, their base price.

Coming from a humble background, Vignesh’s father Sunil Kumar works as an auto driver while his mother KP Bindhu is a housewife. Despite financial challenges, his parents always supported his passion for cricket and encouraged him to pursue his dreams.
He is yet to make it into the Kerala senior team.
Vignesh’s journey in cricket began under the mentorship of his local coach, Vijayan. Over time, he represented Kerala in age group categories like Under-14, Under-19 and Under-23. Despite his achievements at the youth level, he is yet to make his debut for the senior Kerala team.
Before the IPL auction, Vignesh attended trials with the Mumbai Indians. His outstanding performances during the trials impressed the team management and secured him a place in the team.

Earlier, Vignesh showed his potential in the Kerala Premier League. Representing the Alleppey Ripples during the league’s inaugural season, he put in notable performances that brought him into the limelight.
Mixed results for Kerala cricketers at auction
Other Kerala players also made headlines during the auction. Vishnu Vinod was bought by Punjab Kings for INR 95 lakhs, while Sachin Baby joined Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 30 lakhs.
However, it was not good news for everyone. Sandeep Warrier, a Kerala-born cricketer who now represents Tamil Nadu, went unsold despite appearing twice in the auction.
