After missing out on a place in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, India will set their sights on the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, starting next month.

However, it is understood that a minor change is expected in the mega-event’s leadership group. While Rohit Sharma is confirmed to lead the team, he will now have a new deputy.

Shubman Gill was initially given the role of vice-captain of India’s white-ball teams after the 2024 T20 World Cup. Hardik Pandya, who served as Rohit Sharma’s deputy during the 2024 World Cup and ODI World Cup 2023, seemed to be a Strong candidate for the T20I captaincy. However, he was ignored and was not even named vice-captain in any format due to workload management.

As Shubman was named as a substitute, it was expected that he would support Rohit during the Champions Trophy 2025, but it seems unlikely.

According to a TOI report, Hardik Pandya’s Mumbai Indians (MI) teammate Jasprit Bumrah is expected to take on the role of vice-captain and complement Rohit in the decisions.

Jasprit Bumrah was previously part of the leadership group in ODIs and served as vice-captain under KL Rahul during the ODI series against South Africa in early 2022. He later made his debut as T20I captain during the series against Ireland in 2023.

In Test cricket, Bumrah has been a member of the leadership group since 2022. His first stint as captain came during the one-off Test against England, and he then led India in two matches of the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). ).

The BCCI is expected to announce the teams for the Champions Trophy 2025 and the previous England series this week.
