The BCCI has revived the uncapped player rule that allows players who have not played for India or are not on the BCCI central contract for more than five years to be retained as uncapped. This rule, which was part of the league since the first season of 2008, was removed ahead of the IPL 2022 auction.
The rule is supposed to be reinstated specifically for MS Dhoni, who CSK would like to continue playing with for a season or so. Dhoni’s last international match for India came during India’s heartbreaking loss against New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup.

However, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has revealed that the franchise is yet to discuss anything with Dhoni. In TOI, he stated that he would travel this week and they expect Dhoni to play next season.
“We are not sure at this time. We may not even use it for MS Dhoni. It is still too early to comment on this because we have not had conversations with him. Dhoni was in the US and we haven’t had any talks yet. Now I’m traveling this week, so there’s a chance there will be some talks next week. Then there might be some clarity. We are hopeful that he will play, but it is a decision that Dhoni will take himself.”

As a captain, he has won as many as five IPL trophies, all with CSK. He is the most successful IPL leader along with Rohit Sharma.
However, they have shown signs of regression in recent years and will find it difficult to continue for another year. It will be interesting to see if he continues to show up or decides to hang up his boots before a new cycle.
