IPL 2025: Teams received 5 retentions, 1 RTM and a huge purse of Rs 115-120 crore for auction

In what has been the latest development as per reports from ESPNCricinfo, it is learned that franchises will be allowed to retain 5 players ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. Not only this, but teams will also be allowed an option of card with the right to match.

Reports also claim that there will be a big boost for the team in terms of earnings for the IPL 2025 auction. Although the exact amount is unknown, it is learned that the teams will be allowed a purse of between Rs 115 and Rs 120 crore, which will be the highest.

There is no confirmation yet for the retaining slabs. This means there is no clarity on how many Indian players can be part of the pool of retained players or whether there will be a limit on foreign players retained. Some media reports earlier claimed that teams would be allowed to retain 3 Indian and 2 foreign players.

If 5 holds are allowed along with 1 RTM, it will be the highest number of holds allowed in IPL history. Prior to the 2018 auction, teams were allowed to choose 3 holds along with two RTM cards. But ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, the right to match option was ruled out as teams were allowed to retain 4 players.

In the previous auction, IPL teams were allowed a purse of Rs 90 crore, Rs 10 crore more than in 2017. And this time, it will be around Rs 25 crore more than the 2022 edition. Therefore, the IPL 2025 auction is also expected to break massive records.

The IPL 2025 auction will take place at the end of November.

Reports also claim that the IPL 2025 auction will take place at the end of November. The event will take place outside India, more particularly in Saudi Arabia. BCCI had promised IPL franchises that they would release retention rules by the end of August. But there has also been a huge delay in that.

The IPL governing council was expected to meet this weekend in Bengaluru ahead of the BCCI’s annual general meeting on Sunday. Hence, they are expected to release the official statement regarding the retention policy soon with the IPL 2025 auction just around the corner.

Reports also claimed that the IPL is willing to include the old rule regarding Indian limited-overs players who have retired from international cricket or have not played international cricket for five years and are classified as non-limited. The governing body has already announced the franchises on the same.

The IPL scrapped the rule after the 2021 season. This rule will be more in favor of the Chennai Super Kings as it will allow them to retain former captain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player, which could allow them to have a good purse ahead of the auction. In 2017, INR 3 crore was allowed for an uncapped player’s retention, but this was increased to INR 4 crore in 2021.
