Is lack of confidence in defense a reason behind Rohit Sharma’s drastic decline?

On ESPNcricinfo, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar pointed out that Rohit’s defense had been breached on several occasions.

Rohit Sharma’s decline in Test cricket has been beyond expectations and if you watch him bat, it no longer looks like he will return to his best. He hit a purple patch just after being appointed to open and soon became one of the best Test openers in world cricket.

He overcame various conditions and was crucial in India’s immense success abroad. One of the main reasons behind his flourishing at the top was his confidence in defense, which now seemed to be lacking.

On ESPNcricinfo, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar pointed out that Rohit’s defense had been breached on several occasions. Recalling the 2021 England series, Manjrekar exclaimed that he is now unable to get his defense back on its game.

“The first obvious answer is lack of confidence (and) doubt (about why he didn’t get over his slump) and a bit of surprise when he played in that home series against New Zealand, and his defense was being breached. in those Indian fields. So in 2021, when he had that tremendous series against England, he scored at a strike rate of 42, which is a bit like Pujara, and in the entire series, he batted for about 21 hours. So, this was a new discovery for all of us. The time came when he had to play again, he just can’t find the defensive game. So I guess that’s where the problem lies: basically, their defense is in tatters. The courage and patience are just gone.”

Rohit Sharma has averaged just 11.69 since the home season

Since the start of the season at home against Bangladesh in September, Rohit Sharma has scored just 152 runs at an average of 11.69 in 13 innings, including a fifty.

Even in the ongoing Test series against Australia, Rohit has 19 runs in three outings, with a best of 10. He has tried too many things, but none have given him success as Rohit’s struggles have continued.

The fast Australians have exploited their problems on the starting line. Rohit has batted in the middle order on this tour, but his luck has not changed.

There are still two matches left and Rohit will look to regain his lost form. He looked good in training and the team management hoped to see a great goal from their captain.
