England national cricket team batsman Joe Root has achieved a huge feat in the history of Test cricket. The top-order batsman has surpassed Kumar Sangakkara and become the sixth-highest run-scorer of all time in the longest format of the game, with over 12,400 runs to his name.

English batsman Joe Root achieved the feat in the second innings of the third day of the ongoing third Test against the Sri Lanka national cricket team. The final game of the three-match Test series between the teams will be held at the Kennington Oval in London.

Joe Root did not have a great performance with the bat in the second innings for England. But the right-handed bowler made sure he achieved a great feat in Test cricket. He surpassed Kumar Sangakkara when he scored his 12401st run in the longest format of the game.

Coming into the Test match, the hands of the game were evenly balanced. England, asked to bat first because of captain Ollie Pope’s 154 and Ben Duckett’s 84, posted a total of 325 runs on the board. They started off pretty well with the ball too, leaving Sri Lanka in 93/5.

But Dhananjaya de Silva (69) and the in-form Kamindu Mendis (64) frustrated England with an unbroken hundred-run partnership on the second day, helping the team score 263 runs. However, England performed poorly with the bat in the second innings, being bowled out for 156 runs.

Sri Lanka set a target of 218 runs to chase and started off quite well. Though Dimuth Karunaratne fell early, Pathum Nissanka has kept his team in contention. He, along with Kusal Mendis, is playing positive cricket and would want to help the team win and end the series on a high.
