Delhi Capitals (DC) has retained a strong core covering some crucial aspects.
Delhi Capitals (DC) have been in the spotlight ever since news of retentions and releases started surfacing. Finally their retentions are finalized and, of course, there are big surprises.
They have dropped their captain and top batsman Rishabh Pant ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. DC has also not retained Jake Fraser-McGurk or any Indian pacer from the previous season.
Focus on Spin Duo on the top retention slab
1. Axar Patel
Among Delhi Capitals’ best performers in the previous cycle, Axar Patel is their first retention. He is a solid defensive bowler who can bowl at various paces and angles in the middle.
Furthermore, he is also an excellent hitter and can be used as a floater to counter spin in the middle phase. It’s a complete package and, rightly so, retained by the Capitals.
2. Kuldeep Yadav
Kuldeep Yadav is the best spinner in the country and a genuine wicket-taker in any phase. Its partnership with Axar makes DC one of the most fearsome spin attacks.
Kuldeep bowls attacking lines and lengths and makes batsmen mistaken with his shots. His presence will allow DC to focus on strengthening the pacing department, as he and Axar round out the effects department.
The best foreign talent
1. Tristan Stubbs
Tristan Stubbs was fantastic last season with the Capitals and rightly remains an overseas player. Stubbs is equally capable of coping with pace and spin, and with age on his side, he will be a long-term investment.
He can also bowl a bit and keep wickets, making him a complete package. Stubbs will only get better from here.
Wicketkeeper batsman in uncapped section
1. Abishek Porel
In Rishabh Pant’s absence, Abishek Porel got a chance to impress and when he returned, he made sure not to fall behind in the order. Abishek is a batsman who can be flexible with the bat and has shown good keeping technique behind the bats.
He can bat at a high pace and provides LHB dimension to the batting unit, making him a steal at just INR 4 crore. He is only 22 years old and will serve in DC for years.
The retention strategy
The omission of Rishabh Pant is obviously the highlight, while Jake Fraser-McGurk and Mukesh Kumar are other overlooked options. The movement behind the last two players is understandable.
They have spent INR 43.75 crore and will have two Right To Match (RTM) available during the auction. Maybe DC will use one of them on Pant, while the other on Jake Fraser-McGurk, Mukesh Kumar or Khaleel Ahmed if his price is reasonable. But INR 47 crore will be deducted from your purse as per the amount stipulated by the BCCI for 3 capped and 1 uncapped deduction.
Perhaps they were unable to negotiate a deal with Rishabh, leading to his exclusion. Several teams will focus on him, so his price will increase a lot.
However, they have retained a solid core that covers some crucial aspects. They will now look to buy specialists and, with a large purse, DC can definitely look for the best talent available.
