Jansen’s heroics come just a few days after PBKS bought him for INR 7 crore in the IPL 2025 auction.
During the first SA vs SL Test in Durban, Proteas all-rounder Marco Jansen wrote history by equaling a 120-year-old record in the longest format of the game.
Jansen spit fire to finish with a career-best haul of 7 wickets in just 35 balls, which is also the fewest number of balls taken to reach the milestone. Previously, Australian cricketer Hugh Trumble had achieved the feat back in 1904.
In the process, Sri Lanka failed and scored their lowest Test score of 42.
Notably, Jansen’s heroics come just a few days after Punjab Kings (PBKS) bought him for INR 7 crore in the recent Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) auction at almost 50 per cent more than its previous price of INR 4.2 crores.
Jansen consistently threw the correct length and line, effectively utilizing a pitch that offered enough movement to challenge hitters. The left-arm pacer remained disciplined, refraining from forcing wickets and instead relied on the field’s natural assistance to get the job done.

Sri Lanka post multiple unwanted records after chaotic batting display
Talking about the match, apart from Marco Jansen, Gerland Coetzee and Kagiso Rabada got two and a scalp respectively as the Sri Lankan batsmen struggled to find answers to their ferocious pace.
Kamindu Mendis scored 13 runs, making him Sri Lanka’s top scorer in the innings, and Lahiru Kumara contributed an unbeaten 10 runs as the only other player to reach double figures. Five Sri Lankan batsmen were dismissed without scoring, taking the team to its lowest Test total in its history, breaking its previous record of 71 against Pakistan in Kandy in August 1994.
This score also ranks as the sixth lowest in the history of Test cricket, placing Sri Lanka alongside Australia, New Zealand and India, who were also bowled out for 42 in previous Test matches.
At the time of writing, the Proteas have resumed their second innings with the score reading 16 for 0 in 4 overs with Tony de Zorzi and Aiden Markram currently in the crease. The hosts had scored 191 in their first innings and are currently in the driving seat.
