Punjab Kings in ‘dangerous’ situation ahead of IPL 2025: Aakash Chopra

PBKS faced criticism for not forming an optimal team despite being the highest spender in IPL 2025.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) participated in the recent Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) auction with the highest wallet value of INR 110.5 crore and was also the highest spender, splashing out a total of INR 110.15 crores.

Despite this, the PBKS management has received criticism for not having formed an optimal team. His biggest chink in the armor is a lack of experience at the top of the batting order.

Echoing the same line, former Indian cricketer-turned-analyst Aakash Chopra highlighted that PBKS’s opening combination could become a pressing concern for the franchise in IPL 2025. He noted that PBKS has two Indian openers without limits on Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya.

Notably, PBKS had retained Prabhsimran for INR 4 crore, while they spent INR 3.8 crore to buy Arya in the recent mega auction in Jeddah.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Chopra said: “Let’s start with the openers. They retained Prabhsimran Singh and bought Priyansh Arya very dearly. He’s a good kid, he hits clean sixes and his stock has risen dramatically, but he’s a no-holds-barred Indian. Its shares have risen internally. Nobody knows what he will do in the IPL.”

“If both openers remain uncapped Indians, I will be a little surprised that if you got two uncapped openers despite having ₹110 crore, did you buy right? “It is a dangerous situation,” he added.

However, despite the lack of experience, both players have strong credentials. Prabhsimran scored 334 runs at a strike rate of 156.80 in 14 innings in IPL 2024, while Arya was the top run-scorer and hit six sixes in an over in the Delhi Premier League.
