‘Ridiculous decision’: Fans lash out at third umpire after another controversial decision ruled out Washington Sundar

Replays showed some rustling on the Snicko, but a gap between the glove and the ball was visible from the side angle.

There have been many controversial decisions throughout this Border Gavaskar Trophy, and the third umpire has come under scrutiny on numerous occasions. Another similar incident unfolded on the first day of the Sydney Test when the television umpire overturned the on-field decision and ruled Washington Sundar out.

Pat Cummins bowled a short angled delivery down the leg side, to which Sundar tried to pull but missed. The Australian players appealed, but the on-field umpire remained unmoved, so Cummins decided to send him up.

Replays showed some rustling on the Snicko, but a gap between the glove and the ball was visible from the side angle. However, the third umpire exclaimed “he cannot differentiate any space between glove and ball”, and asked the on-field umpire to overturn the decision, dismissing Sundar.

However, the buzz at the Snicko started even before the ball reached the gloves, and replays were not conclusive enough to say that the ball grazed the gloves. Still, the third umpire trusted Snicko when he clearly showed gaps early in the series and made a controversial decision.

Reactions abound as third referee makes another questionable decision

Remember when there was nothing in the Snicko but the third umpire overturned the on-field decision in the Boxing Day Test to out Yashasvi Jaiswal or when KL Rahul was on the wrong end of another debatable verdict in the Perth Test ? India has been at the receiving end of most of the decisions, raising doubts about the credibility of the technology.

The benefit of the doubt mainly goes to the batsmen but that has not been the case in this series and the Indian batsmen have succumbed to strange decisions in almost every game. Washington Sundar is the latest victim and referees must be held accountable for their decisions, especially when they are more than acceptable.

Various reactions have emerged around Sundar’s dismissal and most of them feel that the decision is wrong. We have selected a few and added them below.

Here are some reactions:

It will be interesting to see if the umpires make similar decisions when Australia bat. So far, most of the Indian batsmen have been at a disadvantage and the Australians have enjoyed poor decisions by the umpires.
