Rishabh to captain Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024 amid rumors of playing as impact player: reports

Indian national cricket team batsman-batsman and Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Rishabh Pant is all set to lead his Indian Premier League (IPL) team in the upcoming edition of the T20 competition, according to the reports.

The 26-year-old has not been seen in action on the field since last December. Rishabh Pant was involved in a terrible car accident and suffered multiple injuries. He underwent surgery and has since recovered very well.

During this period, Rishabh Pant missed some of the biggest competitions such as the Asia Cup 2023 and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. He also missed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia and is likely to miss the five-match tests against England in January-February-March 2024.

Rishabh Pant will make his return to competitive cricket in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 and the DC management has confirmed that he will lead the team.

Good news for India as Rishabh Pant is all set to make his comeback

Rishabh Pant is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and will most likely regain his fitness by the end of February, according to Cricbuzz.

Although Pant will return in IPL 2024, there is a question mark over his ability to keep wickets due to the injuries he sustained to his knee, back and ankles at the time of the accident. Pant will only take charge of ground maintenance duties if the BCCI allows him; Otherwise, he will focus on batting and fielding.

Some reports suggested that DC will use him as an impact player during IPL 2024, but if that happened, he would not have been able to lead the team on the field. However, now a franchise official has confirmed that Pant will be on the field and captain the team.

“If he doesn’t stay, he will definitely be on the field and lead the team,” a franchise official was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

Rishabh Pant’s return will be a big boost for the team as they had a poor run in IPL 2023 under the leadership of veteran Australian opener David Warner. DC only won 5 games out of 14 and finished in 9th place in the 10-team points table.

In total, Rishabh Pant has played 98 matches in the Indian Premier League and has scored 2838 runs at an average of 34.61 and a strike rate of 147.97, with 1 ton and 15 fifties.
