On Saturday 8th July, Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced the appointment of Shane Deitz as head coach of the West Indies Women’s National Cricket Team. The decision to hand over the top job to the former South Australia was made at the Board of Directors meeting on Friday 30 June 2023 in Antigua.
Shane Deitz was a consistent contributor for South Australia in domestic cricket for a decade. The goalkeeper-batsman played 66 first-class games and 27 List A games in his career.

Deitz brings a plethora of experience with him when he took on his first coaching job in 2008. Since then, he has coached multiple teams. She has coached the Netherlands and Bangladesh National Women’s Cricket Teams. In particular, she is currently active in her role as head coach of the Netherlands Women’s National Team.

Speaking on the appointment of Shane Deitz as head coach, CWI CEO Johnny Grave said Deitz brings the right skill set to guide the team to success at the international level.
“We are pleased to announce Shane as our new West Indies Women’s Head Coach following a robust global recruiting process. Shane is well equipped for the role, having trained extensively in both the men’s and women’s game, in her native Australia, as well as in other parts of the world. He is dynamic, energetic and very familiar with the requirements of women’s soccer. He brings the right skills and experience to drive the team and women’s football forward in the West Indies.”

Shane Deitz will start his managerial tenure with West Indies at the end of August. The first series under his tenure will be against Australia away from home.

In an official statement released by CWI, Shane Deitz said he is honored to be named head coach of the West Indies women’s team. He admitted that a lot of work remains to be done as the West Indies lag far behind the best teams in world cricket. He also expressed his excitement at working with the talented team.
“I am very honored to have the opportunity to coach the West Indies women’s team. West Indies cricket both men and women have a great history of success while playing entertaining cricket and I aim to continue that formula. The team has a great mix of world-class senior players and some talented young players, which is a good starting point to build on. However, we have a lot of work to do as the reality is that we are behind the best teams in the world and we need to close that gap and get competitive again to compete in World Cups in the future.

“I think the core is there to create a world class competitive side and that is what I will try to do. The standard of women’s cricket is at an all time high and we must strive to reach those heights through good planning, a lot of hard work and then execution on the pitch. I am very excited about that challenge and can’t wait to start working with this talented team,” she explained.
