Before the Indian tour of England, the BCCI designated Shubman Gill as a full -time test pattern. Citing the fact that Gill is young and raw, things will be difficult for him when he goes out to the field, carrying the leadership occupied by the formidable English side. Initially, Gill began as an opening batter in the tests and then changed his base to number three due to little impressive statistics. He has scored maximum races from position No.3, 1.019 of the total of 1,893 races in 59 outputs. Gill has not yet beaten in a place less than one in his international career in all formats. However, Virat Kohli, who recently announced his test retirement, is likely to fill out.
“If they go with [Yashasvi] Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan as openers, need someone more experienced in number 3, maybe KL Rahul or Karun Nair. That would allow Shubman to beat the four, ”Ponting dissected.
To add Gill’s list of concerns, the 25 -year -old has a poor average in English floor. Playing only three tests, Gill has performed 88 races, averaging below 15.

Punjab Kings chief coach (PBKS) for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 pointed to Gill’s batting in two different sport formats. During the T20 League, the Gujarat Titans pattern accumulated 650 races in 15 games at a 155.87 strike rate. He hit six fifty at the top of the order.
“His white ball shape has been incredibly good. But he has a little work to do in his game batting. And that is never easy when you are a new captain, having to worry about your batting in the degree that he will have to do. It will not be easy for him. I think it is more its mental application. The PBKs coach compared Gill with the legendary Virender Sehwag opener regarding his batting techniques.

Ponting also talked about how Gill is the future of Indian Cricket. Taking charge of the reins of the Captaincy of Rohit Sharma, Gill has a long career ahead of him.
“It simply looks like the type of person that the additional responsibility does not disturb too much. He has a really level head on his shoulders. He is someone who will be close to the Indian Crick for another 10 years,” he added.
Gill’s first assignment as Indian test captain will begin on June 20 in Headingley, Leeds. The team includes not only a new captain, but a relatively younger team compared to the last game of India in the whites during the 2024-25 border-gavaskar trophy.
