The former Indian captain calls for limit to the retention rates of players without a limit in IPL

The former Captain of India, Sunil Gavaskar, felt that there is a need for the BCCI and the Governing Council of the Premier League (IPL) of India (IPL) to rethink the limit of the rates for the players without limit due to the problems it brings.

Gavaskar felt that by increasing inr 4 million rates before the IPL 2025 auction to accommodate Chennai Super Kings to retain MS Dhoni as a limit player, the largest group racing group is affected.

Ms dhoni and the ‘without limit’ rates

The former Captain of India, who called Time in his international career in 2019, was included as a player without limit, since he has not played International Crick for more than four years.

While this is not the case with other franchises that had to retain an inherited player, Gavaskar felt that exorbitant offers for relatively unknown players are being done only depending on the numbers on the screen of his computer who are from the player of their respective state leagues.

“Most of them have never seen the player play or what is the opposition. Was it a challenge? Was it competitive? Was it demanding something that does not fit the data,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar?

Gavaskar said that when writing great checks for players who have not experienced life at the highest level, they generally feel overwhelmed by all the attention, both good and bad, the price label gives them.

Sunil Gavaskar feels that IPL should reduce rates

Over the years, there have been several players without limit that attracted large sums of money, but fell along the way and were ignored by the franchises after one or two seasons.

“In all these years, it is difficult to remember that a limit player bought for large numbers that justified his inclusion in the team. Perhaps in the coming years, he can improve a bit with experience, but if he is playing in the same local league, then that possibility of improvement does not improve much,” Gavaskar added.

For IPL 2025, PBKS retained the duo without limit of Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh for a combined total of INR 9.5 million rupees, while Rahul Tewatia (Gujarat Titans), Abishek Porel (Delhi Capitals), Ayush Badoni (Lucknow Super Giants), Shah Rukh Khan (GT).

“To accommodate Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who became a player without limit before the auction last year, the limit rose to RS 4 million rupees. Perhaps it is time to go back in that and reduce it even more so that the Indian Cricket does not lose the talent that seems to float with the pressure when auction is auctioned,” he added.
