The former pacemakers of India, Madan Lal, felt that Jasprit Bumrah is the main contender to succeed Rohit Sharma as Indian Test Captain.
However, he also pointed out Pace Spearhead’s injuries over the years as the greatest obstacle for BCCI to name him as the next employer.
Jasprit Bumrah An obvious option for the test captain?
Rohit announced his retirement on Wednesday, ending a race that covers just over a decade. The BCCI has not appointed the next captain and an ad was delayed due to security concerns around Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 that led to its suspension on Thursday.
Rohit has not been in the best way in the Crick of the afternoon red ball, since he averaged only 30.58 of the 24 games that captained India since he took over Virat Kohli in 2022.
In the defeats of the series against New Zealand and Australia, Rohit humbly averaged 15 and 6 in those series, which led him to sit down voluntarily outside the fifth and final proof of the Border-Gavaskar trophy in Sydney.

In addition to Rohit, Kohli and Ravindra Jadaja, Bumrah is also placed in category A+ of the BCCI central contract list. While the others in that category have retired from the T20i Cricket after the 2024 T20 World Cup victory, Bumrah is still active in the three formats.
However, the 31 -year -old has fought with back injuries that ruled out for weeks. More recently, Bumrah had to be removed in the second entry of the Sydney test against Australia due to a back injury. Five games were also lost in the IPL due to its recovery.
“I feel that Jasprit Bumrah is the right person to lead India. Aptitude is different, but if available and in form, it is the first option,” Madan Lal told PTI videos.
Reto de Rohit and Indian Captaincy
Speaking of Rohit announcing his retirement with only one publication in his social media accounts, Lal felt that the decision must have been the player and not forced by the board.
“Well, his performance has not been excellent. But any decision he made regarding retirement is a personal decision. He must have thought about it,” he said.
With Rohit now retired from two formats, places the BCCI in a unique position among other international teams. Captain T20i of India, Suryakumar Yadav, is not consideration for the Odi format, while Shubman Gill, who has been in an excellent form of hate, is going through depression in the tests. The appointment of Bumrah or Gill will cause India to have different captains for three formats, which is opposed to BCCI’s tradition of having a captain for all formats.
