
Ravichandran Ashwin had done the plea while playing for Punjab Kings (previously Kings Xi Punjab).
Punjab Kings (PBKS), runner -up of IPL 2025, has been left to the final request of Ravichandran Ashwin not to free Varun Chakravarthy before IPL 2020. In the 2019 IPL auction, Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab), had acquired Varun Chakravarth for INR 8.4 Crore.
He made his IPL debut for Kings XI Punjab against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2019, but that would be the only game that would play that season. The mysterious spinner suffered a finger injury that ruled out the rest of the tournament.
That was also the only game that Varun Chakravarthy played for Kings Xi Punjab, before being released after the IPL 2019 season. It was later acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 4 million rupees, and would win the ipl title with the franchise in 2024.

However, Ravichandran Ashwin, who was Kings Captain Xi Punjab in IPL 2019, revealed that he had asked Kings Xi Punjab not to release Varun Chakravarthy after that season, despite having played only one game due to the injury. Ravichandran Ashwin himself was changed to Delhi Capitals (DC) after the 2019 IPL season.
“Before moving to Delhi in the commerce, we were having a meeting of the Board. I said it is fine, you can do what you want. But do not let this guy leave. Luckily, did he leave, KKR chose them and you became exhibited by Ashwin.

In its IPL debut match in 2019, Varun ended with 1/35 figures of three overs. That turned out to be a winning spell when Kings Xi Punjab defeated Kolkata Knight Riders for 28 races.
