Delhi Capitals (DC) could make some shocking retentions and retain some not-so-popular players ahead of the next season.
Delhi Capitals (DC) were among the worst performing teams in the previous cycle and failed to qualify in all three seasons. During the last edition they were only able to win seven games and finished in sixth position with 14 points.
They had a flawed team with several holes and are likely to make big changes heading into next season. DC began the change by firing Ricky Ponting, who was their head coach until the last edition.
While DC had some quality players, they will be tempted to release some. However, they could make some shocking retentions and retain some not-so-popular players ahead of next season.
We look at three shocking retentions that DC could make ahead of the IPL 2025 auction.
Jake Fraser-McGurk
Despite performing so well, DC could leave out Jake Fraser-McGurk as they have better options to retain. However, if DC wants, they can keep him as their third retainer and pay him INR 11 crore.
Jake is a high pace player and capable of playing with a high strike rate from the first ball, making him an ideal player to open the innings. Additionally, it can be a long-term investment and will serve the team for years to come, making it a complete package.

Mukesh Kumar
It may seem like a strange choice, but there is merit in retaining Mukesh Kumar ahead of the auction. Mukesh is a solid Indian player capable of operating effectively in all phases and has gained some experience playing for India.
Indian pacers who can bowl in all phases are generally difficult to find, but DC have someone who has done well in the past and can be a long-term investment. He will only get better from now on and will soon be in high demand, so DC can just hold him back and use him based on his usage.
Anrich Nortje
Anrich Nortje has not lived up to expectations in the last two years, but he has shown signs of improvement since the T20 World Cup 2024. He is a true fast pacer who knows how to bowl brilliantly in the middle and death overs, and those players are not easily available.
He has done well in the league in the past, but injuries derailed his career and sapped his strength. However, Nortje is fit and firing again, is slowly reaching his best and could soon return to his peak, so DC have some solid reasons to keep him.
