England’s wicketkeeper-batsman Ben Foakes sparked a spirit of cricket debate on Twitter during the first Test against India. Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium played host to a thriller between the teams.
While the competition between bat and ball was exciting, an incident occurred during the game that caught the attention of many. During the end of day 4, England goalkeeper Ben Foakes tried to remove Jasprit Bumrah to close the match quickly.
But that was not the normal behavior that goalkeepers do in the game. Ben Foakes tried to be cheeky that the partnership between Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj was ultimately taking the game away from England in the final session of the game.
Jasprit Bumrah tried to dispatch Tom Hartley’s short ball for a great shot. However, he completely missed the ball and was furious with himself. He jumped into the box in frustration because he couldn’t save the bowler’s gift.
As he jumped, Ben Foakes behind the stumps took the opportunity to do so. His bail was immediately removed and he appealed the dismissal. However, he did not affect India as Jasprit Bumrah put his foot down before the stumps broke.

The innings did not last long after that as Tom Hartley removed Mohammed Siraj and India were bowled out for 202 runs. England won the game by a margin of 28 runs and took a 1-0 lead in the series. Tom Hartley picked 7 wickets with the ball and put India’s batsmen under immense pressure. Earlier with the bat, Ollie Pope hit a brilliant 196 runs to help his team set a target of 231 runs.
India will have a lot to work on after an embarrassing home loss against the England national cricket team. Several former cricketers criticized Rohit Sharma & Co. for playing regular cricket during the last two days of play and losing the lead they had after the first day of play.
The second Test will be played from February 2 to 6, 2024 at the Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam. India is also sweating over the availability of star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who suffered a hamstring injury during the final innings of the match while running between the wickets. Currently, there is no official update on Ravindra Jadeja, but if he misses the second game, it will be a huge blow for India who are trailing 0-1 in the series.
Fans on Twitter react as Ben Foakes tries to stump Jasprit Bumrah as he jumps in frustration.
When Ben Foakes tried to stump Jasprit Bumrah while jumping in frustration, fans on Twitter reacted. They lashed out at the keeper-batsman for not showing the spirit of cricket and provoked some angry reactions. Here are some of them:
Hahahahaha Ben Foakes just tried to stump Bumrah while he was in the air reacting to a horrible shot he took. Many seconds after he gloved the bowl.
If he had arrived a fraction of a second earlier, he would have left.
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE SPIRIT OF CRICKET?!?!?

That attempt at puzzling wasn’t very “cricket spirit” from Foakes… @piersmorgan #INDvENG
– Lawrence (@lwrncwds) January 28, 2024
Foakes removed the bails and appealed for a mishap despite the batsman making no attempt to run or gain advantage. Hopefully he would have been retired @piersmorgan but it seems his team was happy to win the test that way #INDvENG

Foakes bewildering the appeal of Bumrah vs England general views on spirit and being left without a striker illustrates how hypocritical English cricket is.

For the record, Foakes shouldn’t even try to stump Bumrah like that. Absolute shit. England can’t complain about Carey/Bairstow and then do that sort of thing.
