A horrific incident involving Daniel Sams and Cameron Bancroft unfolded during a 2024-25 Big Bash League (BBL) match at Perth Stadium on Friday, January 3.

The incident occurred in the first innings of the match when the Perth Scorchers were batting. On the second ball of the 16th over, Ferguson bowled a leg-length delivery to Connolly, who bowled it over square leg.

Seeing the ball rise into the air, Sydney Thunder players Daniel Sams and Cameron Bancroft ran in to catch it. Both players were looking at the ball and because of this they ended up colliding with each other.

It was an absolutely horrendous collision as Sams and Bancroft were unable to get up after the incident as they slammed their faces into each other.

Bancroft immediately held his face and was left bloodied as Sams lay on the ground. Medical staff rushed onto the field after the collision to check on the players and after a while, Bancroft, with a bloody nose, was able to walk off the field with the physiotherapist.

However, things seemed extremely serious with Sams as he was unable to get up and was stretchered off the field.

Speaking on air, Mel Jones was shocked as he spoke about the incident that unfolded on the ground. She said as quoted by Fox Cricket:

“There has been a horrendous collision. There is concern here. Both players totally committed to the ball, with their eyes on it. We didn’t see each other coming. This is what you don’t want to see.

“The biggest concern revolves around Daniel Sams. It’s Cam Bancroft standing up, really getting off the ground. It looks like they’ve done some damage to his nose. What courage: all eyes were on the ball for both of them. It’s the last thing you want to see in any form of sport. “It will take a little bit of time for the players to recover and get back to things as well.”

Furthermore, immediately after the incident it was confirmed that the duo would not be able to participate in the match. All players, fans, support staff and announcers present on the ground were shaken by the incident and play resumed after a long delay.

‘They are both conscious and talking’ – Massive update on Daniel Sams and Cameron Bancroft

Before the second innings, it was officially announced that Daniel Sams and Bancroft were replaced by concussion substitutes Ollie Davies and Hugh Weibgen.

Additionally, an on-air commentator provided a colossal update on the duo, saying that Daniel Sams and Cameron Bancroft are conscious and talking. “They are both conscious and talking,” the on-air commentator said.

Meanwhile, commentator Steve O’Keefe felt that the huge Perth crowd played a role in the terrifying collision between Sams and Bancroft, as the players could not hear each other’s call.

“It’s going to be very difficult to turn it back on. In these big stadiums you can’t hear a player yelling to take the ball away and something like this happens. Completely accidental, but it’s horrible to see. They can only be expected to come out of this with minor injuries. As a team, it’s really difficult to regroup now,” he was quoted as saying by Fox Cricket.
