Will Rishabh Pant open for LSG in IPL 2025? The limitless batting sensation could be his opening partner

Historically, Pant has batted mostly at 4 or 5 in the league and has done a decent job.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) bought Rishabh Pant for a whopping INR 27 crore during the IPL 2025 auction. They were desperate to nab him and finally grabbed him, even after Delhi Capitals (DC) used the Right To Match (RTM) card ).

Now that LSG has shelled out a huge amount of money for him, they want to get the most out of him. The key question will be his batting position in this LSG setup.

Historically, Pant has batted mostly at 4 or 5 in the league and has done a decent job. However, given his superior talent, he has not been as successful as he should have been.

Therefore, LSG should give him a new batting position and allow him to open the innings. At the top, Rishabh is more likely to succeed for numerous reasons.

He is powerful against pace and can aggressively negotiate new ball spin while utilizing pitch restrictions. His aerial shots will have more value when only two players are on the boundary ropes, allowing Rishabh to play more freely.

During the 2024 T20 World Cup, India wore the Rishabh pant at number 3 for the same reason. The more balls you face, the better results you will provide.

If you bat in the middle order, your struggles against spin become more pronounced, but during fielding restrictions, you will at least get some reward for taking risks. From under-19 days, his finest hour came when opening the innings in white-ball cricket.

Given other options in the LSG team, Pant may solve too many problems by opening the innings. It will allow them to field Nicholas Pooran at number 4 as a spin batsman, followed by Ayush Badoni and David Miller, pace batsmen at numbers 5 and 6.

Will Yuvraj Chaudhary be Rishabh Pant’s partner at the top?

One of the most notable purchases by Lucknow Super Giants during the IPL 2025 auction was that of Yuvraj Chaudhary. Yuvraj has been making waves at the national level with his hard hitting and is known for hitting six bigs.

He has a fast bat speed and a good swing, which helps him hit big shots. He’s powerful against pace, can hit them easily, and has counterspin shots to clear the field easily.

He hit the most sixes (21) in the first round of the 2024/25 Ranji Trophy, demonstrating his batting prowess. Additionally, he was the highest run-scorer in the Uttrakhand Premier League (UPL), with 322 runs at an average of 80.50 and a strike rate of 192.81 in five innings, including 27 sixes, the most in the competition.

His natural batting position is up top, where he can play freely and provide a good start to his team. His partnership with Rishabh will make LSG’s initial partnership one of the most dominant in the competition.

Opening the innings for Uttrakhand, Yuvraj scored 123 runs off 60 deliveries, aided by nine boundaries and 11 maximums, at a strike rate of 205 against Karnataka in the first match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. It is clear that he likes to play at the top.

He and Pant will be serious threats to the opponent from the top and provide a solid base for the batsmen to follow. LSG should be smart enough to let these two open in the early part of the tournament and see how they go with their approach.
