Batting great Sunil Gavaskar spoke about India captain Rohit Sharma’s future in Tests. He questioned Rohit if he had given another chance to a player who performed like him in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
Since the last few months, Rohit Sharma’s Test career has witnessed a massive decline. This is because the captain of the Indian national cricket team had not been able toor set the stage on fire and has struggled to even reach double figures, which says a lot about his poor form.
Rohit Sharma failed to get going in Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25
Rohit also failed to get going in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The captain of the Indian national cricket team has looked torrid with the bat ever since he joined the team in the second match of the series in Adelaide. He batted in the middle order for two games but failed and was then promoted.
Later, in the fourth Test, he opened the innings, but the same fate followed. This ultimately led to Indian national cricket team captain Rohit taking a team call while being dropped for the final match of the series. In the Tests against Australia, he scored only 31 runs at a paltry average of 6.20.
Would you have given another chance to a player who performed like that? – Sunil Gavaskar on Rohit Sharma
Sunil Gavaskar spoke about the situation surrounding Rohit Sharma and said that if the selectors want to give the captain another chance for what he has done, it will be something different. But he questioned whether any other players would have received the same treatment. Speaking to Star Sports, he said:
“If you had been a selector, you don’t have a vote as captain but you are a co-opted member of the selection committee, would you have given another chance to a player who performed like that? If you say yes, would you have given another chance to a player like that, then It’s different.”
“If another player had had so many failures, three Test matches against New Zealand and three Test matches here, and you had said you wanted to pick him, it is different, or the thing is clear before the selection committee.”
The second thing is about age: Sunil Gavaskar does not trust Rohit Sharma to play until 2027.
Sunil Gavaskar further pointed out the age factor, saying that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s players don’t have that in their favor either. He believes that if the seniors are not fit for the upcoming WTC final, then they should not play in England. He added:
“The second thing is age. It is different if someone is 25 or 26. Whatever I said earlier, it is not about Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli or (Ravichandran) Ashwin; I am saying that the next World Test Championship The cycle begins in June. It will be a series in England.”
So when the final is after two years, in June 2027, will all these players be available for that? By availability I mean whether they will be fit to play, whether they will be fit in terms of performance. If not, I would say let’s start again from the England series.”
