Former Indian national cricket team all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has named the team’s best captain. He did not name Virat Kohli, Sourav Ganguly or MS Dhoni but chose Anil Kumble and said he had a great attitude as a leader.
Yuvraj Singh was arguably one of the greatest winners of the Indian national cricket team. This all-rounder played a huge role in the success of the time, especially in white-ball cricket, but he also played a decent role for the team in Test cricket.
Yuvraj Singh, despite battling cancer, gave his best for the team and helped the Indian national cricket team win the 2011 ICC World Cup. He was the team’s Most Valuable Player in the tournament and won the Player of the Tournament award for his heroic acts with bat and ball. Not only this, he also played an important role in the 2007 T20 World Cup.
Yuvraj Singh made his debut with Sourav Ganguly and later also played with MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. But according to him, none of the above were the best captains of the Indian national cricket team. Instead, he chose Anil Kumble.
Speaking on the YouTube Club Prairie Fire podcast, Yuvraj Singh cited how Anil Kumble took over in Australia. He explained that the player always wanted to put himself in difficult situations and noted that his attitude was similar to that of Ricky Ponting. He elaborated:
“Kumble became Test captain when we arrived in Australia. I thought Kumble was a guy whose attitude was to take the ball when the situation is difficult, not give it to someone else or when the wickets are falling, let me take the ball.
“So I thought that kind of attitude was great in a leader. That’s why I talk about Ricky [Ponting] “He had the mentality of a leader, to step in when the situation is difficult, whatever the situation is, he is ready to bat.”
Yuvraj Singh talks about the difference between MS Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly. I am leadership terms.
Yuvraj Singh also spoke about the difference between MS Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly in terms of leadership. He mentioned that the left-hander was more aggressive while, on the other hand, the wicketkeeper-batsman also had plan B.
He also mentioned that Sourav Ganguly gave a lot of confidence to him and other players because he knew that they would emerge as match winners for the Indian team. He elaborated:
“Sourav was more aggressive, trying to take teams on. What I liked about Dhoni was that he always had a plan B. If plan A doesn’t work, he goes to plan B. So different captains.
“I came into the team when Sourav was the captain. He gave us a lot of confidence and a lot of opportunities because we were younger and we weren’t consistent. Like me Sehwag Bhajji [Harbhajan Singh] and Zaheer Khan. She stayed with us for a while because he knew these guys can win games in the future.”
