Yuvraj Singh settles Joe Root vs Virat Kohli debate and picks Rohit Sharma over MS Dhoni in T20

Indian national cricket team’s legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has become the latest cricketer to share his views on the debate between Virat Kohli and Joe Root.

Kohli and Root are two of the modern-day greats and have done tremendous work for their teams for over a decade. The duo are part of the batting Fab Four, which also features the likes of Steve Smith and Kane Williamson.

Kohli has dominated all three formats of the game, while Root’s best came in the longest format of the game. Joe Root is currently in the form of his life and is going through a rough patch in Test cricket.

The English batsman has emerged as the leading century-maker for the England national cricket team and has his eyes set on Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most Tests by a batsman in the history of cricket.

Virat Kohli, on the other hand, has not been at his best in recent times. However, he currently has 80 centuries to his name in all formats and is the closest to Sachin Tendulkar’s 100-ton record.

Comparisons have often been made between Joe Root and Virat Kohli, with some experts rating the English batsman as superior to Kohli, while others consider the Indian batsman to be the best.

Yuvraj Singh has now joined the bandwagon and shared his views on the matter. During an interaction on YouTube podcast Club Prairie Fire, Yuvraj Singh was asked to choose between Joe Root and Virat Kohli.

The legendary all-rounder responded by saying that he would choose Root over Kohli only for English conditions while the Indian batsman would be his preference in all formats in different conditions. He elaborated:

“It’s difficult. Joe Root is obviously breaking records, but it also matters where you play. If you play in England, you will obviously choose Joe Root, but if you play around the world, I would choose Virat.” Kohli because, on certain grounds, he can do a lot of damage. In form at the moment, definitely Joe Root, but if you look at all formats, definitely Virat Kohli.”

Yuvraj Singh was also asked to name his picks between Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli for the ‘Play, Bench and Sell’ game. The former all-rounder was clear in his thoughts when he chose Rohit Sharma to play because of his batting and leadership skills.

“I would pick Rohit Sharma as a starter if it comes to T20 cricket. As a player, someone who can change the game with his batting and an exceptional captain, Rohit Sharma would be my first choice,” Yuvraj said.

However, Yuvraj Singh denied naming the players he would bench or sell. He reasoned:

“If I take someone to be on the bench (between Dhoni and Kohli), he will be a starter tomorrow.”
