When asked to bat first, it was not the kind of start India would have wanted as Virat Kohli’s torrid run with the bat continued, perishing for a duck. But after that, captain Rohit Sharma (92) went berserk and didn’t look back.
He hit the Australian bowlers all over the park and kept his team ahead in the game. Rishabh Pant (15) and Suryakumar Yadav (31) supported the captain well and added 87 and 34 runs respectively for the second and third wickets at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium at Gros Islet in Saint Lucia.
In the end, it was Shivam Dube (28) and Hardik Pandya (27*) who ensured India ended the innings on a high. Based on the collective effort with the bat, they posted a massive total of 205 runs. For Australia, Josh Hazlewood was the pick of the players with his figures of 1/14.
In the chase, Australia lost David Warner in the first over. But after that, captain Mitchell Marsh (37) and Travis Head (76) counter-attacked the Indian bowlers and put pressure on them, giving them a scare.
The Head-Marsh duo added 81 runs for the second wicket and brought their team back into the game. Glenn Maxwell (20) made a valuable contribution but nothing went right for Australia after that. Indian bowlers continued to contribute wickets at regular intervals. They restricted the opposition to 181 and won the game by 24 runs.
