4 First Choice Foreign Players for CSK Playing XI in IPL 2025

CSK made some smart acquisitions in the IPL 2025 auction, including bringing back some of their old players.

Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made some smart acquisitions in the IPL 2025 auction, including bringing back some of their old players.

While the CSK management reunited the Ash-Jaddu pair with the purchase of Ravichandran Ashwin, it also brought back stars like Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra from last season.

We specifically focus on CSK’s foreign purchases in the auction and predict their 4 first-choice foreign stars for the upcoming edition of IPL 2025.

Devon Conway

The New Zealand batsman has already shown his batting prowess at the top for CSK, but this time he can be expected to take on more responsibilities. With the extent of MS Dhoni’s involvement still unknown, Devon Conway could also take over the wicketkeeping duties.

Talking about Conway’s batting, his strong IPL record and his ability to steady an innings or pick up the pace when required makes him an automatic pick. His inclusion also gives stability to the top flight as captain Ruturaj Gaikwad will have more freedom to express his game. In 23 IPL matches, the Kiwi amassed 924 runs at an impressive average of 48.63 and average of 141.28.

Rachin Ravindra

Rachin Ravindra is another New Zealand star who was bought back by CSK in the Jeddah auction. After PBKS initially bought the batting all-rounder for INR 3.2 crore, CSK activated their only RTM card to increase the bid to INR 4 crore and bring him back into the fold.

Ravindra’s versatility as a batsman, capable of performing well both at the top and down the order, offers CSK significant strategic flexibility. His left-handed batting style introduces a new dynamic to the team’s lineup, posing challenges for players accustomed to delivering to right-handers. If Ravindra can find his rhythm early in the tournament, his runs could pile up at a pace and he could also be a strong contender for the Orange Cap.

Sam Curran

England all-rounder Sam Curran has donned the yellow jersey again, at a steal price of INR 2.4 crore. From his initial stint with CSK in IPL 2020 and 2021 to becoming the most expensive IPL player with an INR 18 crore move to PBKS, Curran has shown remarkable growth.

His skill with the ball, particularly in the death overs, and his ability to swing the new ball make him an invaluable asset. Furthermore, his transformation into a pinch-hitter capable of batting higher up the order brings much-needed flexibility to the CSK lineup.

Curran’s all-round skills bridge gaps in both the bowling and batting departments. Be it supporting Matheesha Pathirana in the final overs or adding depth to the batting order, her return could prove to be a game-changing decision for CSK.

Matheesha Pathirana

The Sri Lankan pacer will occupy the last foreign spot available in the CSK Playing XI. Pathirana, with his bowling action and mastery of the death, is undoubtedly the first-choice overseas pacer, although they bought in the likes of Nathan Ellis and Jamie Overton, who can provide additional options, ensuring healthy competition in the team.

Furthermore, with the purchase of Khaleel Ahmed, the Indian pacer is likely to operate primarily in the powerplay while Pathirana will remain CSK’s most reliable asset in the death overs.
