A chance at redemption for CSK pacer with Ranji Trophy performance raising hopes ahead of IPL 2025 auction

He has been a vital part of the CSK team over the years.

A Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer put up an exciting bowling display in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25, picking up a fifer in the match between Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh.

Deepak Chahar, who joined CSK in 2018 for just INR 80 lakhs, was bought back by the franchise in the IPL 2022 auction for a hefty sum of INR 14 crores.

Although he has been an integral part of the team, Chahar had a poor outing in the last season (IPL 2024), picking up just 5 wickets in 8 games.

Therefore, his recent performance in the Ranji Trophy will offer him a much-needed chance at redemption ahead of the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction.

Chahar was on a roll as he tore apart Himachal Pradesh’s batting order in the second innings of Day 2 of the Ranji Trophy match.

The 32-year-old pacer bagged five wickets and gave away just 30 runs. His victims were Prashant Chopra (4), Ankit Kalsi (6), Ekant Sen (0), Abhinandan Bhardwaj (10) and Mukul Negi (1).

Chahar’s heroics put Rajasthan on top

Talking about the match, Deepak Chahar’s heroics ensured that Himachal were bowled for 98 in response to Rajasthan’s total of 334 in the first innings.

Himachal got off to a good start after being forced to move on, with openers Arora and Chopra forming a 103-run partnership.

Manav Suthar provided a crucial breakthrough for Rajasthan, dismissing Arora for 59. Chopra followed up 37 runs later, falling to the same bowler and missing his half-century by just one run.

Kalsi and Sen then stabilized the innings, remaining unbeaten with 30 and 4 respectively at the end of the day.
