Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman will conclude his tenure as the ‘director of cricket’ at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in September. VVS Laxman recently expressed his doubts about taking up the role of head coach of Team India after Rahul Dravid, who ended his tenure after the 2024 T20 World Cup.
VVS Laxman seemed to be the natural choice as successor, especially considering his vast experience and his role as interim coach during his tenure at the NCA. However, he did not apply for the post, citing the demanding nature of the role, both physically and mentally, over the next three-and-a-half years.
Next year, the NCA will move into its own facilities on the outskirts of Bengaluru, which will feature several full-size cricket pitches, a modern gymnasium, a swimming pool and residential accommodation. With VVS Laxman stepping down as director of cricket at the NCA, the BCCI will have to choose a candidate to fill his role.
Vikram Rathour to replace VVS Laxman in NCA
Vikram Rathour, who served as India’s batting coach, is a potential candidate to succeed VVS Laxman at the NCA. Rathour has extensive experience at the NCA as a batting coach and was a national selector for four years. He is highly valued for his technical expertise, making him a favourite choice for the post.
“After Rahul Dravid, another legend is expected to quit Indian cricket due to personal reasons after a successful season. Vikram Rathour could be the frontrunner for the job,” said a The sports journalist tweeted.
