While MS Dhoni is often admired as one of the best wicketkeepers in international cricket, Alex Carey has done something that would surprise even MS Dhoni fans. Australian goalkeeper Alex Carey has achieved an incredible record as a goalkeeper in the ongoing Marsh Cup 2024.

Playing for South Australia, Alex Carey made a total of 8 catches during the match against Queensland. Five of Carey’s catches came from pacer Jordan Buckingham. The right-arm pacer took 6 wickets for 41 runs during his 10-over spell in the match with an economy of 4.10.

The batsmen who fell victim to Alex Carey behind the stumps were Ben McDermott, Matt Renshaw, Marnus Labuschagne, Jack Clayton, Jack Wildermuth, Dylan Mclachlan, Gurinder Sandhu and Matthew Kuhnemann.

Alex Carey equals Peter Nevill’s record in domestic cricket

Alex Carey has equaled Peter Nevill’s record as a goalkeeper. Former Australian wicketkeeper Nevill received 8 dismissals while representing New South Wales in a match against Cricket Australia XI. However, he got two wickets through stumps.

In English domestic cricket, Derek Taylor was the first player to take eight catches. The Somerset goalkeeper achieved the feat in 1982. James Pipe later also achieved the same triumph while playing for Worcestershire in 2001.

Alex Carey was part of the AUS vs WI test series recently

Notably, Alex Carey played his first game in the 2023-24 Marsh Cup against Queensland. He was part of Australia’s team during the recent home series against the West Indies. He played in both Tests against the West Indies and scored 82 runs in 3 innings with a half-century. He was not part of the ODI and T20I series.

Meanwhile, South Australia also crushed Queensland by 5 wickets in the match. Batting first, Queensland could only add 218-10 in the first innings. Jordan Buckingham’s bowling and Carey’s wicket-keeping worried their batsmen.

Labuschagne was the highest run-getter with 74 runs. Dylan Mclachlan also scored a crucial 44 runs. Matthew Kunheman added 36 runs late. Carey could not excel with the bat as the first batsman came out cheap for 12 runs.

However, South Australia captain Nathan McSweeney smashed a half-century while Thomas Kelly added 81 runs to lead the team to a 5-wicket victory. South Australia chased down the target in 44.1 overs. Jordan Buckingham was awarded player of the match for hitting 6 wickets in the match.

South Australia finish last in Marsh Cup 2024 points table

Meanwhile, South Australia failed to reach the 2023-24 Marsh Cup final even after a win in their last match. New South Wales and Western Australia are two teams that will meet in the final. The meeting will take place on Sunday, February 25.

South Australia finished last sixth in the 2023-24 Marsh Cup points table. They won only 1 game and lost 5 of 7. Their only match ended without a result. However, they ended the tournament on a winning note, with Alex Carey and Jordan Buckingham putting up impressive performances in the game.
