The way things have been going in recent times, it is very clear that the national selectors are looking at Shubman Gill as a future captain.

The right-handed batsman was given the responsibility of leading the young Indian team during the recently concluded five-match T20I series. Shubman Gill enjoyed a good debut series as captain as he led India to a 4-1 series win. India started the series with a loss but bounced back with four consecutive wins.

Shubman Gill also led the team from the front by finishing the series as the leading run-scorer. In 5 games, the right-handed batsman scored 170 runs with the help of two half-centuries. While Shubman Gill is still new to captaincy and has started his journey with an excellent series win, former India spinner Amit Mishra believes that the youngster is not captain material.

In a podcast by Shubhankar Mishra, the former leg-spinner said that Shubman Gill should not be made the captain. When asked by the host of the show for the reason, Amit Mishra claimed that he had seen the opening batsman’s captaincy from close quarters during the IPL and was not impressed.

“I don’t think he should be made captain,” Amit Mishra said.

“I have seen him in the IPL and he doesn’t know how to lead. He has no idea what it is to be a captain. And before this, he hadn’t been a captain for very long. Why was he made captain then? You have to ask those who made the decision,” he added.

Before leading India, Shubman Gill also led Gujarat Titans in this year’s IPL but failed to impress. After winning the tournament in 2022 and finishing runners-up last year, the Titans failed to even qualify for the playoffs in the IPL. They finished in 8th place with 5 wins and 7 losses.

Amit Mishra on LSG and KL Rahul:

During the same interview, Amit Mishra was also asked if KL Rahul would retain his captaincy of Lucknow Super Giants. The host said that the franchise has different options like Nicholas Pooran, who is doing well in T20 leagues around the world, and also highlighted that Rahul is not even in the Indian T20I squad.

In response, Amit Mishra indirectly took a dig at Rahul by saying that a player who plays for the team should be the captain. He also claimed that Lucknow Super Giants will look for a better captain before the upcoming IPL season.

“I don’t care whether he is in the team or not, but the one who thinks well for the team should be the captain. The one who plays for the team, performs for the team, should be the captain, be it Rahul, Ruturaj or KL Rahul. They will definitely look for a better 100 per cent captain,” Amit Mishra said.
