Andrew Flintoff is the favourite to become England’s new manager

Former all-rounder Andrew Flintoff is reportedly in the running to become England’s new white-ball coach. Current coach Matthew Mott is at risk of losing his job following England’s failed title defence at the T20 World Cup last month.

For the second year in a row, England not only failed to defend one of the ICC titles but also performed poorly in the tournament. In 2023, they had a horrible ODI World Cup campaign as the reigning champions. The Jos Buttler-led side finished a disappointing seventh in the 10-team competition after managing just 3 wins from 9 matches.

Their performance at last month’s T20 World Cup was also unimpressive. England started the tournament as one of the favourites but failed to reach their peak as they also failed to defend their T20 World Cup title. They suffered defeats against teams like Australia, South Africa and eventual champions India and were eliminated at the semi-final stage.

England eye Andrew Flintoff as head coach:

Following poor performances in two World Cups in recent months, the ECB is reportedly considering a new captain and a new coach in the white-ball format. According to recent reports, not only coach Matthew Mott but also Jos Buttler are at risk of losing their captaincy.

The candidate who is emerging as the favourite to replace Mott as England head coach is Andrew Flintoff. According to inews.co.uk, England’s director of cricket Rob Key wanted World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan to replace Mott. However, Morgan recently distanced himself from the job and Andrew Flintoff has now emerged as the favourite.

Key will meet Buttler and Mott this week before making the final decision. The report also indicated that Mott is already resigned to losing his job halfway through a four-year contract. With Mott’s fate all but decided, Flintoff is likely to take charge soon.

While Flintoff has no experience as a coach of an international team, he has previously served as a consultant for England’s white-ball teams. Currently, the England great is plying his trade as coach of Northern Superchargers in the Hundred.
