Babar Azam’s captaincy is not a problem, Sanjay Manjrekar surprisingly claims as he exposes Pakistan’s “deep-rooted problem”.

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar spoke about the current situation of the Pakistan team after their exit from the T20 World Cup 2024. He said that removing Babar Azam as team captain or changing players in the team will not solve the problem.

Pakistan has been eliminated from the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. They have shown a torrid performance in the ongoing tournament which has led to their early exit from the tournament. This was the third time they were eliminated from the league stage of the tournament.

Pakistan started the tournament with a horrible loss against the United States of America. The team led by Babar Azam seemed clueless with bat and ball in the game against the associate nation and lost the game in the super over as they failed to score 18 runs.

After that, Pakistan was embroiled in a standoff with arch-rival India. They looked favorites to win the game as they dominated the game for most of the match but could not finish the game as India held their nerve and won the game by 6 runs to give the Babar Azam-led team their second defeat.

Two losses in the two matches dented Pakistan’s chances of qualifying for the Super 8 phase of the tournament. They were depending on Ireland to beat the United States of America, but defeat in that match meant the end of the tournament for the Babar Azam-led team as they fell short of points.

Sanjay Manjrekar believes Pakistan’s cricket problem is deep-rooted. He believes they do not have good quality players and adds that a change in leadership will not change anything. Speaking to Star Sports, he explained:

“It is not a problem that can be solved by a change of leadership or selection of players, drop some players, get a new one and suddenly Pakistan are back on top. The problem is deep-rooted. I don’t think they will do it.” . “We are getting players of exceptional quality or skill and in the end, it has to be a matter of skill, doesn’t it? You can’t say they played badly and yes, the display wasn’t great.”

It was not one of the strongest teams – Sanjay Manjrekar on Pakistan

Sanjay Manjrekar claimed that many did not back Pakistan to be the top four team in the tournament because they did not have quality players. He added that because of the way they played in the league stage, they did not deserve to play in the Super 8. And he explained:

“Did we expect Pakistan to make it to the final four? No. They weren’t one of the strongest teams, so from that point of view, not making it to a Super 8 is a bit of a shock and, I mean, that happened because they lost.” . “The way they played they didn’t deserve to be in the Super 8 after that performance.”

Pakistan will face Ireland in their last match of the tournament. The game will be played on Sunday (June 16) in Florida.
