Bangladesh names new captain for ODI series against West Indies

He will lead the Bangladesh ODI team for the first time.

In a recent development, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has named a new captain for their upcoming three-match ODI series against the West Indies. The teams are currently facing each other in a 2-match test series, in which the Windies lead 1-0.

All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz has now been handed the reins of captaincy of the ODI team after taking over the leadership duties in the ongoing Test series. Miraz will lead Bangladesh’s ODI team for the first time as he replaces Najmul Hossain Shanto, who is still out due to a groin injury.

Left-handed batsman Afif Hossain Dhrubo also earned a call-up to the ODI team after a year-long absence, having last represented Bangladesh in December 2023. Meanwhile, fellow left-hander Zakir Hasan, who was part of the series from ODI against Afghanistan in UAE last month, has been omitted. Fast bowler Nahid Rana, who impressed during his ODI debut against Afghanistan, retains his place in the team.

Notably, all ODI matches will be held in St Kitts and the series will begin on December 8.

Towhid Hridoy ruled out for West Indies ODI leg

On the other hand, Bangladesh middle-order batsman Towhid Hridoy has been ruled out by the BCB medical team due to ongoing groin problems.

Speaking on the development, BCB sports doctor Monzur Hossain Chowdhury said:

“Hridoy had complained of pain in the right groin region and further investigation confirmed the presence of a medical condition. “He has been advised to rest and we will re-evaluate him in two weeks to determine if he is ready to play.”
