The 39th match of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24 took place between Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers. The match between the teams took place at Perth’s Optus Stadium and saw the visitors clinch the nail-biter with 3 wickets.
Perth Scorchers didn’t get off to a great start after winning the toss and batting first. Stephen Eskinazi returned after retiring injured and soon Sam Whiteman (17) also died. Josh Inglis (18) tried to get going but was unable to do so as the hosts reeled at 52/2.
Captain Aaron Hardie and Laurie Evans led the rescue charge and put the Sydney Sixers under pressure. They got the team out of trouble and added 85 runs for the fourth wicket, putting Perth Scorchers on top after losing the first wickets of the game.
While Hardie finished with 32 runs, Evans scored 72 runs. Cooper Connolly (37*) made a vital cameo at the end which propelled Perth Scorchers to a total of 197 runs. For the Sydney Sixers, Ben Dwarshuis was the pick of the players with his figures of 2/23. Apart from him, Jackson Bird and Sean Abbott got a wicket each.
Chasing the goal, the Sydney Sixers went astray. Daniel Hughes and James Vince (22) oozed class and made no mistake. They added 65 runs for the opening stand before the latter came back at the end. After the first wicket, Josh Phillippe took center stage and ensured that his team did not lose momentum.
Hughes (74) along with Phillippe (32) added 59 runs for the second wicket and kept Sydney Sixers in the chase. But both lost their wickets quickly and the team came under pressure. However, captain Moisés Henriques played a blind.
Even though wickets fell at the other end, Henriques continued to smash the bowlers and took his team home. He finished with the knock of 47 unbeaten runs as the Sydney Sixers completed a sensational 3-wicket victory. For Perth, Jason Behrendorff picked three wickets, while Aaron Hardie bagged two scalps.
