Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan will not face any problems when he returns home after the ongoing Test series in India. BCB is confident that the player will not be harassed by the government despite being accused in a murder case.
Amidst the anti-government protests in Bangladesh, all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been charged in the murder case. The news has shaken the entire cricket fraternity as it emerged that the former captain of the team was among the 147 accused persons who are linked to the case.
Shakib was accused in the murder of a garment worker, Mohammed Rubel. The victim’s father, Rafiqul Islam, filed the complaint and the Bangladesh national cricketer is the 28th accused in the FIR filed in connection with the alleged murder.
But at the time of the murder, which took place on August 5, Shakib was not in the country. He was playing in the Global T20 Canada league in Brampton, where he was captain of Bangla Tigers Mississauga, and has not returned to his country even once since.
After that, he travelled to Pakistan for a Test series, then played a county match for Surrey and now he is in India for another Test series. But after the ongoing series, Shakib Al Hasan will be returning home and with murder charges hanging over him, things will not be easy for him.
We believe that the interim government has made its position on Shakib Al Hasan very clear – Shahriar Nafees
However, Shahriar Nafees, the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s head of cricket operations, said they have spoken to higher authorities and have a very clear relationship with Shakib Al Hasan. He said the government does not want to harass anyone unfairly.
He also mentioned that the government is very clear about Shakib and if he is fit, the all-rounder will take part in the Test series against the South African national cricket team. Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, he explained:
“I think the Hon’ble Chief Adviser, the Legal Adviser and the Sports Adviser have spoken very clearly about Shakib Al Hasan. There is a clear message from the Bangladesh government that no one will be unfairly harassed in the cases that have been filed.
“We believe the interim government has made its position on Shakib very clear. Unless there is an injury issue or a selection issue, I don’t see any reason at this stage why Shakib Al Hasan should not play for Bangladesh in the home series.”
The last time we saw Shakib in action was during the first Test against India. He didn’t have a great performance as he bowled 8 overs in the first innings and failed to take a single wicket. In the second innings, he was blasted by Rishabh Pant and ended up with the most expensive match figures of his Test career.
Shakib was his side’s top scorer in the first innings as he scored 32 runs off 64 balls before being swept untimely and falling early in the second innings. He will want to make an impact in the second game, which starts on September 27.
