BCCI announces key decisions taken at 93rd Annual General Meeting; The Duleep Trophy will return to the zonal format

On Sunday, September 29, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced key decisions taken at the board’s 93rd Annual General Meeting.

The 93rd Annual General Meeting of the BCCI was held in Bengaluru and all the top officials of the board were present at the meeting to discuss various issues related to Indian cricket.

In the meeting, Arun Dhumal and Avishek Dalmiya were elected unopposed to the IPL Governing Council. This will see Dhumal continue his tenure as IPL president for at least a year.

Additionally, the Indian Cricketers’ Association (ICA) took the decision to nominate V. Chamundeswarnath as the players’ representative, and he was included in the IPL Governing Council.

Meanwhile, the audited accounts for the fiscal year 2023-24, as well as the Annual Budget for the same season, were approved and adopted at the Annual General Meeting. Recently, the board of directors inaugurated the new NCA with world-class facilities and it was named a Center of Excellence. For the work carried out at the NCA, the officials were applauded by the members of the organization.

“The members of the General Body appreciated the efforts of the officials for the work done regarding the new campus of the National Cricket Academy, the Center of Excellence,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in an official media . release.

Another important decision taken at the meeting was the continuation of the legal status of the Board of Control for Cricket in India as a society, which was registered on December 1, 1928 in Chennai (then Madras).

“The members unanimously resolved to maintain the legal status of the BCCI as a corporation. The members further resolved that the BCCI tournaments, including the IPL, shall not be converted into a company,” the board added.

Duleep Trophy to return to zonal format, BCCI decides

According to the Cricbuzz report, the Duleep Trophy competition is all set to return to the zonal format. India A recently won the 2024 edition of the Duleep Trophy under the leadership of Mayank Agarwal.

The competition was played between four teams: India A, B, C and D. The teams were chosen by the selection committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India and several international stars participated in the competition.

However, at the AGM, the consensus was that the Duleep Trophy did not serve its purpose and some associations were unhappy with the format of the 2024 season.

There were discussions about the non-selection of some deserving players and it was agreed that the Duleep Trophy should return to its original inter-zonal format from next year, with teams chosen by zones.

Meanwhile, starting next year there will be teams from six zones, unlike previous seasons where there were five zones. The six zones will be East, South, West, North, Center and Northeast.
