BCCI extends WPL 2025 retention period

The BCCI wrote to the franchises yesterday (October 15) about the new development.

In a recent development, the holding deadline for the upcoming Women’s Premier League auction (WPL 2025) was further extended and set for a new date.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) wrote to the franchises yesterday (October 15) about the new development.

Although initially the franchises had until October 15 to send the list of players they intend to keep, they will now have until November 7 to send the list.

For the uninitiated, each team is allowed a squad of 18 players, including six international players. Just like in the Indian Premier League (IPL), teams have the option to release players annually. The BCCI will organize a mini-auction based on player retention, although the date of the WPL 2025 auction is yet to be confirmed. For the third season, the auction budget has been raised to INR 15 crore, following increases of INR 12 crore in the first season and INR 13.5 crore in the second season.

BCCI is yet to announce the details of the WPL 2025 tournament

The BCCI is yet to confirm the dates and location of the third season, but it is anticipated that it will take place in the February-March period, similar to the schedule of the first two seasons. According to a Cricbuzz report, the franchises have stated that they believe it will take place during this time period as the national senior women’s season concludes in mid-January.

Looking ahead to the third season, there is speculation of a mega auction, with the possibility of an additional team being presented. The BCCI, like the IPL, will need to establish a retention policy for the WPL, which currently has only five teams.
