BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced prize money for domestic cricketers as the board continues to take steps to strengthen India’s domestic cricket scene.

Last year, the BCCI had announced an increase in prize money for domestic tournaments. The prize money for Ranji Trophy winners was increased from Rs 200 crore to Rs 500 crore. On the other hand, the prize money for runners-up and losing semi-finalists was increased from Rs 300 crore to Rs 100 crore respectively.

The board also increased the prize money for Iran Cup, Duleep Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, Deodhar Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The BCCI also made sure to increase the prize money for women’s tournaments.

After increasing the prize money for domestic tournaments, the BCCI has now decided to introduce prize money for players as well. Jay Shah announced on Monday (August 26) that the board would introduce prize money for the Man of the Match and Player of the Tournament in all women’s and youth cricket tournaments.

The Man of the Match in the Vijay Hazare Trophy as well as the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy will also receive monetary prizes.

“We are introducing prize money for Man of the Match and Player of the Tournament in all Women’s and Youth Cricket tournaments under our National Cricket Scheme,” Jay Shah wrote on X.

“In addition, a cash prize will be awarded to the Man of the Match in the Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali Senior Men’s tournaments.”

Initiative to recognise and reward outstanding performance: BCCI Secretary Jay Shah

In the same post, Jay Shah also explained the reason behind the decision. He stated that the prize money would be a great step towards recognising and rewarding outstanding performances on the domestic circuit. Shah concluded by thanking the BCCI Apex Council for supporting the initiative.

“This initiative aims to recognise and reward outstanding performances in the domestic circuit. A heartfelt thanks to the Apex Council for their unwavering support in this endeavour. Together, we are fostering a more rewarding environment for our cricketers. Jai Hind,” Shah wrote.

Meanwhile, Shah is reportedly open to leaving the BCCI for the ICC. He is reportedly the favourite to replace Greg Barclay as the next ICC president after the latter decided not to extend his contract. The deadline to apply for the post is August 27 and Shah is yet to make a final decision.

According to reports, Shah is likely to be elected unopposed if he runs for the post. Meanwhile, DDCA president Rohan Jaitley is the favourite to replace Shah as the next BCCI secretary if the latter leaves the board to join the ICC.
