'Being an international coach is about the three': former RCB coach opens his training techniques

RCB has qualified for the playoffs three out of five times under it.

The former chief coach of the New Zealand Cricket team, Mike Hesson, assumed the training hat for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in India Premier League (IPL) in 2019. In an interview with Sportskeeda, he revealed some of his tactics and techniques.

While arguing the main responsibilities of an international coach, Hesson emphasized the evaluation of domestic and foreign conditions along with tactical strategies.

“You are playing sides in your own foreign conditions and conditions that you must make sure you prepare the team to excel in those conditions. And obviously, the tactical side, day by day or session per session, must add value and observe and ask the right questions of the game group. Being an international coach is about the three, ”said HESSON.

The former BlackCap coach, HESSON, feels that technical strategies are “much less” in franchise Cricket tournaments than internationals. The short period of time makes coaches difficult to meet a new group of players and connect them mentally for team success.

“In terms of building a team culture in a very short space of time, and gathering that group and working with all those players, that is a great administration and understanding of the man with whom you are working with. And then very tactical: how can you get the best of this group? You have inherited a group or bought a group together in a draft or auction and you have to find a strategy that suits the group of players, obviously you have to add some tactical knowledge, but technical work is probably much less in little space of time as a franchise tournament, “he added.

In addition, the 50 -year -old has shared his experience of working with different captains such as Kane Williamson and Brendon McCullum. According to him, a coach must “adapt to the style of the Captain.”

“I see that the coach’s work is to adapt to the style of the captain. While the captain is adequate for the team, his work is to add value to that. Certainly between Kane and Brendon, it was quite different. Different personalities: I guess we were in charge of different areas because we had different strengths, ”explained HESSON.

Mike Hesson has helped RCB reach three playoffs during its five-seasons in 2019-2023. He is currently appointed coach of Islamabad United, a franchise of the Super League of Pakistan (PSL) that can collide with the next IPL season.

However, RCB will begin its IPL 2025 campaign against KKR on March 22.
