Bizarre moment as ground-staff member washes hands near pitch while wet outfield delays start of USA vs Ireland game

The start of the match between USA and Ireland in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 has been delayed due to a wet pitch at the Turf Ground stadium at Central Broward Regional Park, Lauderhill, Florida.

The region received heavy rain this week and several areas were also flooded. Fortunately, the rain gods showed mercy on Friday (June 14), but wet outfields kept any action at bay. The match between USA and Ireland was scheduled to start at 08:00 pm (IST) but could not start even at 10:00 pm due to wet outfields.

The grounds staff have been working hard to make the surfaces suitable for play, but things are not looking very promising so far. Amidst all this, a photo of a ground crew member washing his hands near the field has gone viral on social media. The incident took place when both referees were on the field although the ground staff member was behind them.

United States about to qualify for Super 8:

If the match between the United States and Ireland falls through, the former will join the Indian team in the Super 8s of Group A. It will also end Pakistan’s T20 World Cup campaign so far.

India has already booked its place in the Super 8 by winning its first three matches against Ireland, Pakistan and the United States. On the other hand, the United States is in second place with two wins in three games. They defeated Canada and Pakistan before losing to India.

Pakistan and Canada have one win each from three matches, while Ireland are yet to open their account. An annihilated match will mean that the US will reach five points and advance to the next round. Pakistan can finish with a maximum of four points even if they win the group stage match.

The other teams that have booked their place in the Super 8 are Australia, Afghanistan, the West Indies and South Africa.
