Chennai Super Kings, CSK

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) finished fifth on the points table with seven wins and as many losses in IPL 2024. A lot of attention is focused on MS Dhoni and whether he will play again in IPL 2025.

Meanwhile, the former CSK captain said that he will think about his future with the franchise after the IPL finalises the retention rules. He further said that he will do whatever is best for the team.

The struggles of the franchise under new captain Ruturaj Gaikwad became visible early this season. He managed to score runs with the bat, but his bowlers failed to perform as he had hoped.

Several important points were discussed in the meeting between the IPL owners and the BCCI and rebates were one of them. Several franchises were in favour of retaining at least seven or eight players. Almost all franchises were against mega auctions but said they were in favour of mini auctions every year.

Impact players and participation of foreign players were the two major issues discussed in the meeting. Delhi Capitals owner Parth Jindal opposed the rule saying that it limits the role of all-rounders, especially Indian all-rounders.

Earlier, Rohit Sharma also said that the rule hampers the role of Indian all-rounders in the tournament as it allows teams to play with an extra batsman or bowler depending on the match situation.

In a normal season, Chennai Super Kings will also release a few foreign players ahead of the mega auction. In this article, we predict three of them. There are reports that the IPL franchise might receive a prize money of Rs 100 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) foreign players to be released ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction

Richard Gleeson

Gleeson joined the team as a replacement for the injured Devon Conway. He played just two matches for the franchise and picked up one wicket.

He will be 38 by the time the next IPL begins and hence, considering his age and fitness, Chennai Super Kings could release the England fast bowler. Apart from playing in the IPL, he has played six T20Is for England.

Mustafizur Rahman

Fizz may be the other player CSK can let go. It could also depend on the team combination. He took 14 wickets in nine matches for the franchise. He had to return to fulfill his international obligations with more than half of the tournament remaining.

One of the reasons why CSK might not retain Fizz is that Bangladeshi players in the past have not received non-participation certificates after they registered for the auction. The release of Mustafizur will help the CSK management resolve this issue.

Mitchell Santner

The New Zealander could be the third overseas player to be released. Santner has played only for Chennai Super Kings in his IPL career. In total, in 18 matches for Chennai Super Kings, he has picked up 15 wickets.

In 2024, he played three matches and took two wickets. The management could eventually buy him back in the mega auction, but they may have to release him eventually so that they can retain a large chunk of the prize money.
