Concerns surrounding Rishabh Pant as ball hits kneecap; Rohit Sharma gives update

At the end of the day, Rohit Sharma provided an important update on Pant’s injury.

During the second day of the first Test between India and New Zealand, Rishabh Pant suffered a knock on his knee and had to leave the field. The event occurred on the final delivery of the 37th over when Devon Conway tried to play a great shot but missed and Pant failed to connect the ball, hitting Pant’s knee.

He immediately felt intense pain and had to call the physiotherapist, who attempted to perform primary treatment. It was the same area where Pant had been injured after his horrendous accident.

His pain was severe enough to take him off the field and require more attention. Initial impressions did not seem promising, because he was limping and somehow managed to reach the ward.

Dhruv Jurel, who is not part of the XI, stepped up to replace him for the rest of the day. Meanwhile, Pant was seen sitting right behind the boundary cushions where the team physiotherapist provided him with the necessary medical attention.

Rohit Sharma provides update on Rishabh Pant’s injury

Rohit Sharma attended the post-game press conference where he spoke about a variety of things from everything that happened in between. He also gave an update on Pant’s injury, confirming that the area where the ball hit had swollen, but termed Pant leaving the field as “precautionary”.

“Unfortunately the ball hit him right in the kneecap, the same leg where he had surgery. It has a little swelling. The muscles are quite tender right now, so this is a precautionary measure. We don’t want to take risks. Rishabh doesn’t want to take any chances because he has gone through massive surgery on that particular leg. So, that was the reason he came in. I hope he recovers and we will see him on the field tomorrow.”

India had a really bad day as a unit as nothing went in their favor except the toss where Rohit made the wrong decision to bat first. The New Zealand pacers took advantage of the overcast conditions and bowled out India for just 46, their lowest total at home.

Now Pant’s injury has exacerbated matters for them as he not only keeps wickets but is also among the best options to face the pacers in tough conditions. If he does not progress well with his injury, India could find themselves in a deeper hole after a forgettable start to the series.
