CSK vs GT: “Impact Player Rule Doesn’t Apply On MS Dhoni” – Virender Sehwag On Chennai Super Kings Skipper’s Future

Former India opener Virender Sehwag has made a startling statement regarding the future of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Virender Sehwag believes that the impact player rule does not help MS Dhoni to prolong his career because he is the team captain.

Chennai Super Kings will take on defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL 2023 final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on booking day, Monday, May 29. The team led by MS Dhoni was the first team to reach the final of the tournament after beating the Titans in Qualifier 1.

He has to stay on the ground for the captaincy – Virender Sehwag

In a conversation with Cricbuzz, Virender Sehwag pointed out that MS Dhoni is playing for the franchise as a captain. Sehwag believes that Dhoni will be seen as a Cricket mentor or manager for CSK in the near future.

“It’s not difficult (playing cricket at 40), if you’re fit. MS Dhoni hasn’t hit much this year. He is not aggravating his knee injury. Often he would come in the last two overs. If I count the total turnovers he faced, I think he would have faced 40-50 turnovers this season. Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

“The Impact Player rule does not apply on MS Dhoni. Because he’s playing just for the captaincy. He has to stay on the ground for the captaincy. The Impact Player rule is for someone who doesn’t field but bats, or a bowler who doesn’t need to bat. Dhoni has to do 20 overs; if he’s not the captain, he won’t even play as Impact Player. So, you will see him as a mentor, coach or Director of Cricket. added.
