Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer Deepak Chahar spoke about how skipper MS Dhoni clashed with Stephen Fleming and told him that he will play every game before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018. He also revealed after the captain’s conversation that he was the first name on the team’s sheet.
Deepak Chahar has been the kingpin of the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. Since he joined the team in 2018, he has been the most trusted bowler for skipper MS Dhoni and not to take anything away from him, he has also repaid the captain’s faith by taking his team to great positions.

Deepak Chahar’s unique ability to swing the ball sharply on the power play and deliver great lines and lengths on the kill sets him apart from the crowd. The impressive performance by him has even earned him a place in the Indian side and he has also stepped up on the international stage.

However, Deepak Chahar became part of the IPL in 2016 when he was acquired by the now defunct Rising Pune Super Giants. He, however, did not have opportunities there since in two seasons he played only 5 games. But when he joined CSK, he showed his talent to the world.

Deepak Chahar revealed that in RPSG, Stephen Fleming picked him as the batsman because he performed well in the practice game, but an injury after that hampered his chances. He said he was disappointed because my team’s management told him before every game that he could play, but he didn’t get a chance. Speaking at Breakfast with Champions, he said:
“When I first met Mahi bhai, he was batting. Fleming had selected me for the Pune team, not because of my bowling but because of my batting. The first day of our camp we had a scrimmage. I was batting. I put one down. I hit five sixes to score 30 runs and then when I ran in to take a run I pulled a hamstring. By the time I got fit, the team mix was set.
“Rajat Bhatia was playing year. The next year Steve Smith became the captain. The funny thing was that in 2017 I was the twelfth man in the entire season. They always told me: “Get ready. You could play.” I used to prepare for every match, but I would get disappointed.”

Deepak Chahar went on to say that when he joined CSK, manager Stephen Fleming wanted him to play after a few games, but MS Dhoni was stern with him. He explained:
“The following year, when the auction happened, I was drafted into the team in 2018. During the first game discussion, Fleming wanted me to play after a few games and wanted to cast a senior player in his place. Then Mahi bhai told him, ‘he has to play all 14 matches no matter what. Tell me about the rest. Later, Mr. Kasi (Vishwanathan, CSK CEO) told me that when the team was being formed, my name was written first all the time.”
Deepak Chahar has also been exceptional on the ball in the current edition of the league. In the 9 games so far, he has taken 12 wickets at an economy of 8.63 and will be crucial to his team’s chances in the final against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Sunday (May 28).
