Delhi Capitals drop Indian legend from IPL role: Big changes ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction

Delhi Capitals have decided to remove Sourav Ganguly from his current IPL role. She will now oversee the women’s team and the SA20 franchise.

The Delhi Capitals have made significant changes to their setup ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, marking the end of Sourav Ganguly’s involvement with the franchise’s men’s team as Director of Cricket. According to a report in the Times of India, the former India captain will now move on to oversee the women’s teams, both in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and Pretoria Capitals in SA20.

In a major reshuffle, former India cricketer Venugopal Rao has been appointed as the new director of cricket for the Delhi Capitals men’s team.

“Sourav Ganguly will no longer be part of the IPL men’s operations team. His new role as Director of Women’s Cricket will focus on the WPL team and Pretoria Capitals,” a source told TOI.

This move represents a turning point for Ganguly, who has been associated with men’s cricket in various capacities for decades. After leaving his role as BCCI president, Ganguly took over as Director of Cricket for Delhi Capitals, but was set to take on a dual role as head coach and director of the men’s team after the departure of Ricky Ponting as coach, a measure that did not materialize. .

Ganguly’s future in global cricket governance also appears to be under scrutiny, with his role as chairman of the ICC Men’s Cricket Committee possibly coming to an end later this year as the international body undergoes its own revision.

Delhi capitals end retentions

With the upcoming IPL mega auction, Delhi Capitals are taking steps to solidify their team. The franchise has retained key players like Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, although they may use the Right-to-Match (RTM) card to re-sign some of their other core players.

Pant, however, remains a topic of discussion as his future as captain is in doubt. A team member hinted at the uncertainty, telling TOI: “The ball is now in Pant’s court whether he wants to continue as captain or just as a player.”

In addition to these changes, the Capitals are weighing the option of retaining promising non-international player Abhishek Porel, who impressed last season. No final decisions have been made regarding his future with the team.

With preparations for the mega auction in full swing, Delhi Capitals are planning to conduct trials next week at three different venues, with the selection process being affected by the ongoing Ranji Trophy. While other franchises such as Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals have completed their trials, Delhi Capitals are short on time as they finalize their plans ahead of the November auction.
