Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has admitted that he does not care about Virat Kohli or his form ahead of today’s ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final.
Virat Kohli will be appearing in his second ICC T20 WC final when the Men in Blue take on Aiden Markram’s South Africa in the final in Barbados. The right-handed batsman finished runners-up in this competition during the 2014 edition in Bangladesh when he finished as the player of the tournament, but India lost to Sri Lanka.
Virat Kohli’s T20 WC 2024: far behind his perfect 2014 and 2016 campaign
Two years later, on home soil, it was Virat Kohli who conceded the winning six against the West Indies in the semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Five years later, in 2021, Kohli captained the national team in a T20 WC for the first time, but they were eliminated from the first round.
A year later in Australia, Virat Kohli, who was the leading scorer in the 2022 edition, lost his second semi-final match in the tournament and first since 2016. This year, history seems to have repeated itself as India reached the T20 World Cup final exactly after 10 years. But there is a big difference between the Kohli of 2014 and the current one, who is acting as an opening batsman for the first time.
10 years ago, Kohli was not only the leading run-scorer but also won his first Player of the Tournament award for scoring a total of 319 runs. And a decade later, Virat Kohli is a long way from the 300-run mark, let alone being a contender for the Player of the Year award.
Of the 7 matches played in the group stage, Super 8 and semi-final, Virat Kohli has scored only 75 runs, with a total of 37 runs against Bangladesh. It is fair to say that Kohli has not been able to adapt to the opening position and the pattern of assaulting opposition bowlers by scoring runs quickly.
Virat has a chance to prove all his doubters wrong in tonight’s finale, but Sanjay Manjrekar isn’t too worried about it.
Sanjay Manjrekar says team is bigger than Kohli and also more important
Speaking to Star Sports, Sanjay Manjrekar stated that he is not worried about Virat Kohli’s performance as long as India wins matches. Manjrekar admitted that the overall performance of the team is much more important and stated that the team’s new style of play is capable of allowing them to lift the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.
“I am not really worried about Virat Kohli’s form because the team’s form is much more important. Of course, India can lift the 2024 World Cup, India has figured out a new template, the modern template to play T20 cricket, and so far it is paying huge dividends,” Manjrekar told Star Sports.
Sanjay Manjrekar then highlighted that South African pacers Anrich Nortje-Kagiso Rabada and opener Quinton de Kock will be the threats for India. “I would say one of the fast bowlers, either Anrich Nortje or Rabada or Quinton De Kock. He will bat Quinton De Kock for sure.” – concluded Sanjay Manjrekar.
