Dravid locks in Rohit and Jaiswal as openers for Afghanistan T20Is

“As of now, we will certainly open with Rohit and Jaiswal,” Dravid said. “But when you have a team, you have to have that flexibility to do whatever it takes if that’s what’s best for the team and gives us the best chance to be successful. So there’s nothing set in stone. But certainly, we’re very happy.” with what Jaiswal has done as an opener for us, and also gives us a left-right combination at the top.”

Jaiswal came to the team on the back of an excellent IPL 2023, where he was the fifth-highest run-getter, with a total of 625 runs. What separated him from other Indian openers was his massive strike rate of 163.61.
More importantly, it has been able to replicate those numbers internationally. Since he made his T20I debut, against the West Indies in August 2023, Jaiswal has 430 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate of 159.25. And in all T20s since the start of 2023, his powerplay strike rate is 163.69. For comparison, Gill’s strike rate over the same period is 138.44.

Kishan ‘not available’; Iyer fell

Dravid also clarified that Ishan Kishan had called for a break during this series and Shreyas Iyer was eliminated. After the team was announced, there was speculation as to whether Iyer had been rested or eliminated. Earlier this week, he was named in Mumbai’s squad for their second Ranji Trophy match, against Andhra starting January 12. Dravid clarified that there was no disciplinary reason behind Iyer’s exclusion.

“Ishan Kishan was not available for selection,” he said. “Ishan asked for a break [while] in South Africa – what we agree to, what we support, [and] which we have recognized, and has not yet been made available for selection. I am sure when he is ready he will play domestic cricket and be available for selection.

“And certainly, in the case of Shreyas Iyer, there was absolutely no disciplinary reason for his non-inclusion. There were a lot of batsmen in the team, and Shreyas Iyer missed out. He also didn’t play the T20s in South Africa, if you notice, and it’s unfortunate . He is a good player, but there are many batsmen, and it is not easy to fit everyone into the team and the XI. There is absolutely no disciplinary reason, and that was not discussed in “Everyone, at least in my conversations with the selectors when they were having these deliberations and discussions.”

For this series, Afghanistan is without Rashid Khan, who is recovering from his back surgery. But they still have a strong spin attack comprising Mohammad Nabi, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Qais Ahmed, Noor Ahmed and Sharafuddin Ashraf, and Dravid was looking forward to the challenge that India’s batsmen faced.

“We know they have some really good spinners,” Dravid said. “So it will be a good challenge for our batsmen. We have also discussed about it – how to play and dominate their spinners. So it will be a good challenge and we are looking forward to it.”
