England name new captain and Rajasthan Royals star to miss West Indies ODIs

The player has been out for some time due to a calf injury.

A Rajasthan Royals (RR) star has suffered a setback in his rehabilitation and will miss the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies on the shores of the Caribbean. The player has been out for some time due to a calf injury.

Jos Buttler, the England Whites captain, will not take part in the ODI match after initially being named in the squad as he is yet to fully recover. However, he will be part of the T20I series, where he will also lead the unit.

Lancashire all-rounder Liam Livingstone will take over captaincy duties during the 50-over format in Jos’ absence. He has never managed England in any format before, and this will be his first spell as a leader.

“Buttler will miss the three-match one-day international series against the West Indies after suffering a slight setback in his rehabilitation. Liam Livingstone will take over as captain of the ODI series and the Lancashire all-rounder will lead England for the first time. “Whether to add a replacement player to the team is yet to be decided.” stated the official statement.

Jos Buttler has not been available since the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final

Jos Buttler has been out of action since England’s elimination from the 2024 T20 World Cup in the semi-final match against India. He suffered a calf injury in July, which kept him out of The Hundred and White-ball series against Australia at home.

He was initially named for the ODI and T20I series against Australia, but his recovery was slower than expected, meaning he was unable to take part in the series, although he remained with the team throughout the Test. Phil Salt and Harry Brook led the team in T20Is and ODIs respectively in their first appearance as England captain.

Buttler’s fitness remains a concern for England, given his recent history of calf injuries. He has attempted numerous comebacks since the new one, but always suffered a setback.

However, he is expected to join the team for the T20I series against the West Indies. The three-match ODI series against the West Indies begins on October 31 in Antigua.
