England ODI and T20I squads for Australia series announced

On Monday, August 26, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced the T20I and ODI squads for the upcoming white-ball home series against the Australian National Cricket Team.

The England-Australia series begins on September 11 and will be the Three Lions’ first white-ball series following the departure of head coach Matthew Mott, who stepped down following the team’s failure at the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Talking about the squads, the England and Wales Cricket Board selection committee has made some important decisions by including new faces in the squad and dropping the veterans, who have not been looking at their best in recent times.

As many as five non-international players have been chosen for the T20I squad that will contest the series against Australia’s national cricket team. Those players are Essex batsman Jordan Cox, Warwickshire pair Jacob Bethell and Dan Mousley, Leicestershire spinner Josh Hull and Hampshire spinner John Turner.

Durham player Brydon Carse has also joined both teams after serving a three-month ban. Notably, he was suspended following an anti-corruption investigation by the Cricket Regulator.

As for key absentees, Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, Tom Hartley and Chris Jordan, all of whom were in England’s 2024 T20 World Cup squad, have not been called up. Mark Wood will also miss the series after injuring his thigh during the first Test match against Sri Lanka in Manchester.

Additionally, superstar all-rounders Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran have been picked for the T20I series but have been dropped from the ODI squad by the selectors.

Talking more about the ODI squad, players like Gus Atkinson, Harry Brook, Matthew Potts, and Jamie Smith have been included to eye the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Also, non-cap players Josh Hull, Bethell, and Turner have been selected.

The biggest omission from the ODI squad is veteran batsman Joe Root, but he is reportedly still in the plans for the ODIs and has been given rest for the Australia series.

Meanwhile, the T20I matches between the Jos Buttler-led side and the Australians will be played on September 11, 13 and 15 at Utilita Bowl, Sophia Gardens and Emirates Old Trafford. While the ODI matches will be played on September 19, 21, 24, 27 and 29 at Trent Bridge, Headingley, Seat Unique Riverside, Lord’s and Seat Unique Stadium.
