Explained: How Heinrich Klaasen will get INR 23 crore from SRH with top slab of just Rs 18 crore

Reports suggest that SRH is willing to spend up to INR 23 crore for Klaasen, their first retainer.

Some reports from reliable sources suggest that Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have identified Heinrich Klaasen as their top retainer. Klaasen has been SRH’s leading run-scorer in the previous two editions, scoring 927 runs at an average of 44.14 and a strike rate of 173.92 in 26 innings, including six fifties and one century.

No wonder SRH is willing to give a hefty sum to its premium batsman who can take wickets. Reports suggest that SRH is willing to spend up to INR 23 crore for Klaasen, their first retainer.

Now the question arises, how can SRH give INR 23 crore to the South African player when the first retainer is set at INR 18 crore as per the retainer rules? As per the rules, the first retainer gets INR 18 crore, the second gets INR 14 crore and the third gets INR 11 crore.

However, it is not mandatory to give them an amount equal to the retention slab; Teams can give more or less sum to the player in any holding position. If a team retains all five international players before the auction, it will have to spend INR 75 crore from its purse.

Therefore, it is up to the teams to decide how to spend Rs 75 crore on their players. They can give INR 23 crore to their first retainer and adjust the remaining Rs 52 crore among the other four limited.

However, if they do not give the amount equivalent to the retention slab, the amount equal to the retention slab will be deducted from the wallet. Suppose the first hold block is set at INR 18 crore, but teams only give INR 16 crore to their first hold, then INR 18 crore will be deducted from the bag and not INR 16 crore.

But if a player’s fee is higher than the league fee, then that player’s fee will be taken out of the team’s pocket. The same will happen in the case of Klaasen.

While the league’s retainer fee is set at INR 18 crore, SRH retains Klaasen at INR 23 crore as their first retainer. Therefore, INR 23 crore will be deducted from SRH’s wallet and not INR 18 crore.

Sometimes players demand a high amount to be retained due to the enormous auction value, as in the case of Klaasen. Therefore, teams prepare to pay the sum demanded to keep that player instead of letting him enter the auction.

Ultimately, it’s up to teams to decide how to spend their money, but the rules are there to ensure teams don’t gain an advantage by deliberately lowering player fees. Ultimately, it’s fair to everyone involved.
